Somaliland: It’s Not In the Bag Yet For DP World in Berbera – Report

Bringing an end to years of uncertainty, the President of Somaliland Ahmed Mohamed Mahamoud, known as Silanyo, finally awarded the contract to extend, refurbish and operate the port of Berbera to the Dubai operator DP World (DPW). The Somaliland port is of high strategic value as it is situated opposite Yemen and so attracted the interest of the major international groups, Bolloré in the lead.

But the operation – and the $442 million investment by the UAE that goes with it – is not without consequences for the self-declared republic of Somaliland which wants international recognition. With the economic disputes between the countries in the Horn of Africa and traditional tensions, it may be some time befoe DPW docks on the Somaliland coast!
