Somaliland Commemorates First Ever Youth Day on 20th February

Hargeisa – Somali Commentator– The President H.E. Ahmed Mohammed Mohamud Silanyo has recognized the 20th February to be the National Youth Day to be commemorated annually.
The Head of State made the directive through decree reference number JSL/M/XERM/249-4570/022017 which prescribes the date to be observed in honour of the youth.
According to a press release by Presidential Spokesman Hussein A. Egge, the President reached the decision following a request from the ministry of Youth and sports.
In the same strength H.E. Ahmed Silanyo acknowledges the importance of the role of the youth in the society hence sees the need to underscore their position.

On the other hand, the presidential candidate of Kulmiye Muse Behi Abdi has sent the similar congratulatory messages to Somaliland youth in general and said that 20th February is a remarkable day for the history of Somaliland. Speaking to the press in Hargeisa, Mr Behi said, “I hereby congratulate Somaliland youth due to the occasion of 20th February. On this day, many students were killed in Hargeisa and Burao – they were on the frontline of the country’s development. I remember that some of them were repairing Hargeisa hospital. But the regime of Siyad Barre stopped them doing that and killed them.”
